Marlborough Tennis Club’s new courts begin to take shape as fundraising gathers pace

The first phase of Marlborough Tennis Club’s six new all weather tennis courts has been completed in record time.

Situated behind trees, protected from the southwest wind, and allowing far-reaching views over the Marlborough Downs, the new courts will provide a stunning new facility for Marlborough and its two hundred tennis club members.

Gareth Clarke, technical officer on the Tennis Club’s Development Committee told marlborough.news : “It’s gone fantastically well with the weather. Because it’s been so dry the earth contractors have been able to work quickly.”

“There are very few places from which the site can be seen. It’s unobtrusive. It’s been great fun seeing the plans come to fruition.”

Officials from the Area of Oustadning Natural Beauty were consulted about the siting of the courts.  Three platforms have been created on the site, between the golf club and the A346. Two tennis courts will be built on each platform.

Tennis club members will be able to enjoy the social facilities at Marlborough Golf Club.

Four of the courts will have down lighting. There will be full access for all including wheelchair and disability tennis.

Specialist tennis court contractors start work in September. By the end of the year the courts will have their tarmac surface, but it will be Spring 2018 before the special, green non-slip surface can be added.

Meanwhile funds are still needed and the club hopes to raise at least a further £120,000. The club are grateful to have the support of Waitrose through their green token scheme, but other sponsors are still required.

The Club are offering court sponsorship at £10,000 per court.  This buys the right to advertising with company logos on the windbreaks at each end of the court for a period of five years and a commemorative plaque.

The next big event the club is organising will be their Great British Tennis Weekend Open Day on Sunday, July 9. This is open to adults and teens and comes with with fun tennis for juniors.

The Club has a 'mydonate' page.

For further information and how to volunteer to fundraise go to their website.
