Pewsey Tennis Club wins top 2018 award as best club in WiltshireAt the annual meeting of the Wiltshire Lawn Tennis Association (a branch of the national organisation) Pewsey Tennis Club achieved two notable awards - Pewsey Tennis Club was named 'Club of the Year' and Keith Hampson was named volunteer of the year.
The Club has six floodlit hard courts, a hitting wall and one court with dedicated mini-tennis markings. The judges found the club had "always maintained high standards on and off court with a vigilant approach to safeguarding": "This club offers a quality all year round coaching programme and has fantastic links with the community."
Pewsey's Keith Hampson is the Club's match secretary and organises its league teams - six mens, two ladies and four mixed. Supporting him for the award the Club wrote: "His infectious enthusiasm rubs off on all around him and the team success in 2018 is a true testament to his committed approach."
2018 has been a very successful year for Pewsey Tennis Club. Their teams took six league titles in the Swindon & District League, and the Club also had good performances at both adult and junior levels.
The Club membership is close to record levels - their 'great challenge' for 2019 is to recruit more 'teens' - both boys and girls.
Colin Gratton is the Club Chairman: "New coaching Programmes (Beginners to Players), Winter League competition for juniors, weekly junior club sessions as well as exciting and different socials and club tournaments has given the club a real buzz."
Writing to members, Colin Gratton says: "I am sure you will all agree that Pewsey is a very special club, has two fantastic coaches in Martin Wright and Jon Gregory, as well as a great Committee team backed up by many members who are always willing to help. The awards are an wonderful early Christmas present.
The Wiltshire LTA awards were also good news for Marlborough Tennis Club - their Barbara Jones won the Lifetime Achievement Award.
In their appraisal of her contribution to the Club, the judges wrote: "This outstanding volunteer has been committed to their club for over 50 years as a player and many loyal years on the club committee...She has spent many years managing junior teams, taking them to matches and encouraging the next generation of players."
"Through her tireless support of the committee and tennis in the community, she has helped the club develop from a small club of 50 members to a thriving facility with more than 200 members."
