Rose Tremain to open Marlborough LitFest 2018 as its Golding Speaker

Rose Tremain (Photo copyright David Kirkham)Rose Tremain (Photo copyright David Kirkham)Marlborough LitFest will return for its ninth year in 2018 over the weekend of September 28-30 and has announced that acclaimed author Rose Tremain will be this year’s Golding Speaker, opening the festival on Friday, September 28. She will be talking about her fiction and her latest book - which is a memoir.

A prize-winning novelist and short story writer, Rose Tremain has seen her work published in 27 countries since she began her career aged 33. She was made a CBE in 2007 and in 2013 was appointed Chancellor of the University of East Anglia.

She has always been an uncommon novelist, who has preferred pure invention. Her historical fiction is perhaps best know, with Restoration being turned into a film in 1996.

Her latest book is her first non-fiction work (to be published in April 2018), titled: ‘Rosie: Scenes from a Vanished Life’, in which she tells of the ‘vanished’ world of life in the 1940s and 1950s in England, describing the slow journey from being Rosie, the outcast girl, to becoming Rose, the writer of powerful fictions that have won worldwide acclaim.

Marlborough LitFest hosts an annual Golding Speaker to highlight Marlborough’s long connection with the Nobel Laureate and Booker Prize winner, William Golding, at an event sponsored by the William Golding estate. Past Golding Speakers include Will Self, Lionel Shriver, Louis de Bernieres, Fay Weldon and Howard Jacobson.

Kay Newman of the Marlborough LitFest is thrilled Rose Tremain has accepted their invitation - especially as she cites William Goilding as an influence: “Rose Tremain is a hugely inventive novelist who speaks delightfully about her work and the creative writing process."

The 2018 LitFest programme is now being put together and will include a variety of speakers throughout the festival weekend, featuring new and young fiction writers as well as established names, children’s authors, workshops and poetry events, as part of the Festival’s intention to bring the best of good writing to the town of Marlborough.

The Marlborough LitFest's lead sponsor will once again be Brewin Dolphin, with events sponsors Hiscox Insurance, the William Golding Estate, Marlborough College and St Francis School.
