Marlborough lecture - Richard Cooper, a life of adventure

Richard Cooper finishing the World Ironman Championship in HawaiiRichard Cooper finishing the World Ironman Championship in HawaiiRichard Cooper, who lived in Marlborough for twenty years, will be speaking about his passion for adventure when he gives this year’s Kempson/Rosedale Enterprise Trust's lecture in the Ellis Theatre at the College at 7.30 pm on Sunday December 2.  The lecture will be beautifully illustrated with photographs, many of wildlife.

Richard windsurfed his way into the record books when in 1999 aged 40, he became the first person to windsurf some 2000 miles around the British Isles.  Since then he has trained hard and become a successful triathlete winning his age group at several UK Championships.  He also represented Great Britain at five major international finals with a couple of top 10 finishes.

“All my adventures have been different, all bring different things and have been intrepid and unique,” says Richard.

Growing up on a farm in Lancashire, Richard says gave him a taste for being outside, for trees and wilderness.  After a degree in Agriculture at Reading University he completed a Master’s Degree in Tropical Agriculture and Development.  Following this he worked in Costa Rica and Egypt for some years.

Richard now works in bio technology and is Managing Director of the Marlborough based company, AB Vista.  Now aged 60, he says he’s not finished with adventure yet.  He would still like to sail across the Atlantic, go hiking, trekking or cycling in the Himalayas, as well as visit the Antarctic or Antarctica.

The Marlborough-based charity the Kempson/Rosedale Enterprise Trust funds selected students from St John’s Academy or Marlborough College who plan to spend holiday time or gap years undertaking an enterprising and challenging activity.  They look for young people with ideas for inspiring and remarkable activities, which will enrich their lives.

Richard told marlborough.news, “I am very pleased to be asked to give this lecture for the Trust.  It is a charity close to my heart – young adults about to make their way in the world who want to do something valuable for themselves and other people.  Taking on things outside their comfort zone and putting something back into local communities develops young people into better adults.”

For the last nine years Richard has been on the selection panel for those applying for funding from the Kempson/Rosedale Trust.  “I’ve travelled to a lot of countries so that enables me to ask the right questions. I’d love to be 18 and planning these expeditions myself.  I like listening to young people’s dreams and ambitions, spirit and bravery.”
