ALTON TALKS: “MARSH FRITILLARY AND OTHER BUTTERFLIES ON THE MARLBOROUGH DOWNS” at Coronation Hall, Alton Barnes
5 September 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 11:59 pm
Susan Clarke on “Marsh Fritillary and other Butterflies on the Marlborough Downs.”
Susan Clarke is zoologist specialising in Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). She has been working for both Butterfly Conservation and Natural England on Pewsey Downs and the surrounding landscape, mainly concerning the conservation of the Marsh Fritillary and Duke of Burgundy butterfly. This included an extensive habitat survey which is being used to target management work across Pewsey Downs and the Wansdyke. On the Pewsey Downs the Marsh Fritillary is very rare and declining (not only in the UK but across Europe) but in some years, it can be seen in large numbers. It is quite a mysterious butterfly that needs special habitat management and monitoring. Susan will try and cover some of the past and on-going survey and conservation work at Pewsey Downs, touch on the more weird aspects of the life of a Marsh Fritillary and mention some of the other rare butterflies and moths around Alton Barnes.
