Job Hunting  -  Ten Top Tips

1. Be clear

Do you know what you are interested in? Find out about roles, if it is easier initially, eliminate those that are not for you! Knowing what you are interested in will narrow down your search and enable you to apply for roles you really want.

2. Be prepared

Take time to find out about roles/companies that interest you. Look at websites and social media presence to get more of a feel. Think about what you have to offer an employer too. This will help to give you clarity, conviction and confidence.

3. Be focused

Target your tools to secure an interview! Does your covering letter show; you understand the role, why you are interested in the role and how you fit the role? Tailor your C.V. to highlight how your skills and experience match the role. Aim to make the employer want to know more about you.

4. Be disciplined

Schedule time each day to focus on your job hunt. Set yourself a goal of what you want to achieve with a timescale to prioritise your activities. Remember a few quality applications are better than lots of sloppy applications.

5. Be proactive

Post your C.V. online so your details can be seen by many potential employers. Create a presence on a social networking site such as Facebook or Twitter as many jobs are advertised there first. Write speculative letters, leave a good impression.

6. Be brave

Spread the word about you! Tell people what you are looking for and what you have to offer. Attend networking events and build a network of people who can help you develop your career. Create a LinkedIn profile to make yourself more visible to potential employers and connect with people who could help you.

7. Be constructive

If you have gaps in your knowledge, skills or experience take action! Consider applying for some work experience, volunteering or enrol on a course to help you bridge any gaps and improve your employability.

8. Be flexible

You will be learning all the time during the job hunting process. Do not be afraid to change your original ideas on job role if they are no longer right for you. Keep an open mind to new opportunities too.

9. Be persistent

Job hunting can take time. Keep your goal in mind and keep going! Give yourself a pat on the back for every application you do. Remember to follow up applications it shows interest, commitment and effort. All good employee qualities.

10. Be positive

Grab a positive mindset and keep it no matter what happens! Would an employer want a positive or negative employee? Aim to learn from every experience so you can do better next time. Project a positive attitude through your voice, words and non verbal behaviours.
