Snow Crisis: Give them the tools to do the job
Not wishing to diminish in any way the selfless efforts we have heard on the wireless and seen on TV, Nationally and Locally on the recent weather issues and those that have responded – Dunkirk/Blitz Spirit et al. I would like to place before those various agencies responsible for our roads my experiences of RAF snow clearance.
Let's think National Defence. The RAF need to take off and land aircraft on surfaces in all conditions wether it is defensive-offensive-humanitarian or political.
They have the equipment to do this, but they still have to get the load be it human, arms, or food, to and from the airfield by road.
From what we have been indoctrinated into believing from the media is that the Snow Plough and 4X4 Land Rover or one of its Asian derivatives is the only and ultimate answer, well it’s NOT.
Not once in this recent situation have we seen any deployment anywhere in the country of a 'Snow Flyer'
What is this you may well ask, a secret weapon? No it is a vehicle designed to throw snow away.
If I had two of these vehicles at my disposal, I would have cleared the A346 in 2-3 hours of the drifts.
I am not theorising – I have done it, in Germany, with German Vehicles, in 1958.
It is pathetic to see diggers and well meaning farmers spending hours and fuel shovelling snow from roads over a hedge or clearing drifts, that could be dispersed in minutes by a Snow Flyer.
So come on you responsible road agencies, give us your answers for your failure to have this equipment available.
This is not a vexatious rant but a desire to be proactive, contact would be welcome.
