All those in Marlborough who are interested in enticing more tourists to their businesses – shops, restaurants, pubs, coffee bars and accommodation – have a chance on Wednesday evening (September 19) to find out more about the Great West Way project.
The Great West Way is a major new touring route of about 125 miles between London and Bristol, which goes live later this year and presents a bold opportunity for businesses, destinations and visitor attractions along its route to reach more visitors – especially international visitors.
This is one of a number of ambitious projects made possible by the government’s £40m Discover England Fund, which is administered by VisitEngland.
Marlborough Town Council are working with the Great West Way Ambassador Network as an Official Destination on the route – to make sure the town is firmly pinned to the Great West Way visitor map.
After a great deal of research, plans for the route and ways to market this new way to encourage tourists to the area, have been tested with consumer focus groups in Berlin and New York and have been checked with the travel trade. The Marlborough area sits close to the centre of this route – a good position to take advantage of the project.
The event in the Town Hall starts at 6pm on Wednesday (September 19). Representatives from VisitWiltshire will be on hand after the event too, to answer questions and provide information packs and literature about the scheme.
Entrance is free, but people need to register their attendance with Eventbrite – here. This is to allow the Town Council to make sure numbers are not exceeded and there are enough seats – and refreshments – for everybody.
The evening will start with an opportunity for networking and refreshments. Then at 6.30 pm there will be a presentation about the Great West Way with an opportunity for questions afterwards. The event will last about one-and-a-half hours.
The Great West Way will be launched officially in Bath on November 22 – at the Roman Baths. There is much more about the project and attendant competitions on the VisitWiltshire website.
