James Thomas, Wilding and Barrelhouse to lead Marlborough’s Christmas Lights extravaganza on Friday Nov 22

Mayor Mervyn Hall and Wiltshire Radio's Ben Prater switching on Marlborough's Christmas lights with a bit of help from Ben's kids in 2017Mayor Mervyn Hall and Wiltshire Radio's Ben Prater switching on Marlborough's Christmas lights with a bit of help from Ben's kids in 2017Christmas in Marlborough officially begins on Friday November 22 with the Christmas Lights Event. The Christmas market will be in full swing from 10 am selling festive gifts, food, mulled wine, cider, hot chocolate and doughnuts. There is a children’s after-school fun-fair and Father Christmas and his elves will be in the Town Hall from 3 pm to 8 pm.

Entertainment starts on the main stage near the Town Hall at 5pm with St John’s Academy Band.  The children from Marlborough Academy of Dance and Drama and Marlborough Community Choir are performing and later in the evening the Barrelhouse Blues Band and The Wilding Band.

James Thomas from BBC Wiltshire’s Afternoon Show will be switching on the Christmas lightsJames Thomas from BBC Wiltshire’s Afternoon Show will be switching on the Christmas lightsThis year, BBC Radio Wiltshire’s Afternoon Show presenter, James Thomas, will be assisting Mayor Mervyn Hall to switch-on the Christmas lights at 6.30 pm. James told marlborough.news, “I’m very much looking forward to switching on the lights.  It’s such a lovely time for the community to come together and join in with something that doesn’t involve looking at a screen!  Also, Christmas lights cheer you up when the weather is miserable and dark.”

“I know Marlborough fairly well and get very envious every time I visit because I want to live there.  I’m regularly coming to the town for interviews and then usually find an excuse for an early lunch break so I can visit some of the amazing cafés and places to eat.”

James is a big fan of all things Christmas.  “Christmas is an amazing excuse to get together with family and friends and just eat some fabulous food.  For some people it’s the only time of year they get together and if it wasn’t for Christmas they might lose touch.”

Mr and Mrs Nutkin are nuts about Christmas!Mr and Mrs Nutkin are nuts about Christmas!Visitors to the Christmas Lights Event also need to look out for squirrels!  According to Clare Harris, Assistant Town Clerk, “These squirrels are nuts about Christmas.  Mr and Mrs Nutkin love everything about Christmas and are eager to forage for the right present for everyone.  Their excitement is catching and their festive, fluffy, cosy squirrel charm is irresistible!”

Tickets for Santa’s Grotto in the Town Hall can be booked ahttps://www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=612

Look out for the Guide to Christmas in Marlborough magazine published by marlborough.news  - FREE and available in shops and homes and many places around the town in the days before the Christmas Lights Event.
