Great Bedwyn goes back in time for a Victorian Christmas Carol Concert

Great Bedwyn pupils at their Victorian Christmas ConcertGreat Bedwyn pupils at their Victorian Christmas ConcertOn Wednesday December 11, we travelled back to Victorian times to tell the story of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

Firstly, we went to sing carols outside the Doctor’s Surgery with our glowing lanterns. We were joined by members of our community. We sang, Once in Royal David’s CityAway in a Manger, and Little Donkey.

Next we went to St Mary’s Church to perform our concert.  Lights were low and each child held a candle when we sang O Holy Night.

Mimi de Winton opened the magical show with a beautiful introduction that touched your heart. This was followed by Mrs Cox’s handbells group playing The First Noel.

We had great help from the narrators who told the story of A Christmas Carol.  The main character was Bill Matthews who played Scrooge.

Our wonderful choir sang The Ukranian Bell Carol and were joined by glorious ringing handbells and Laurie Hawtin on Cello.  The Rutter carol, Colours of Christmas, followed with many children performing beautiful solos confidently.

Christmas is here was a highlight of the evening - a song written by Mr Evans and lyrics written by pupils in year five and six.  Throughout the evening, the orchestra played a variety of traditional carols led by Mrs Barker.  Hats were thrown into the air in the finale Merry Christmas everyone! by Slade.

We had great help from the person who made this amazing play happen, Mrs Bengtsson the director.  Mr Lambert changed the scenes for us and helped with mics.

Thank you to all those people who made this magical night happen.  One member of our community said, “It brought a tear to my eye…it really was lovely”.

Amelie Disley, a choir member said, “This night was AMAZING! It was the best night ever. I loved every second of it.”
