Obituary: Sue Bailey - 1946 - 2020

Sue BaileySue BaileySuzanne Mary Bailey was born in Barnet, Hertfordshire on 12 April 1946.  She was the eldest daughter of Kath and Dick Gale.

The family returned to Dick’s home village of Alton Barnes where her sister Lesley was born.  Sue went to the village school and then on to Pewsey Vale School, taking the bus there every day.  It was on the bus that she met Dave Bailey, a boy from Stanton St Bernard.  One evening, a few years later, Dave took another girl to a village dance: he left with Sue that night.  They married in 1965 and lived in Bottlesford.  Angela was born in 1967.  In 1968 the family made the big move to Minal and Lisa was born in 1969.

Sue  worked  in the Spar supermarket in Marlborough; many people know her from there.  But her passion for working with people with learning disabilities began when she started work at Postern House in Marlborough.

With family commitments she returned to the supermarket for a few years, but when a job at Pewsey Hospital came along, supporting adults with learning disabilities, she moved there.  This job moved to the Swindon College Wyvern Unit in Marlborough, and then as a senior support assistant at the College itself when the unit closed.  She truly loved her job and the people she worked with.

Sue’s community work was also evident in her long service to Minal Parish Council.

Sue found retirement difficult as she missed her job so much; this led to the creation of the Inside Out Club and her work with Marlborough Mencap.  Her commitment, energy and enthusiasm were tireless.  She had a remarkable empathy with those with learning difficulties; endless patience; loved dancing with her ‘client friends’ at parties; arranged numerous outings ….

Sue was also a great gardener;  loved cricket and went to many England games;  knitted  wonderful items for children and adults.  Above all, family was of utmost significance: Dave, Angie, Lisa, Charlie, Graham, Sophie, Abbie and Ollie.

St Mary’s Church, Marlborough, was packed for her funeral: a tribute to a lady who contributed so much to the lives of so many;  was a selfless model of the kind of life that makes communities good.

Rachel Maurice

Her colleague at Mencap and Chairman of East Wilts, Noel Barrett-Morton added:  "‘Sue Bailey was a lovely person who was very much loved by everyone who met her, she will be sorely missed".
