Coronavirus: Marlborough Town Council go into a controlled near-shutdown

High St from St Peter'sHigh St from St Peter'sNever before in thirty minutes of a Town Council meeting have so many major decisions been made as happened at last night's (Monday 16 March) meeting of the Planning Comittee.  All public buildings owned by the Council are to be closed with immediate effect, all events over the next few months have either been cancelled or postponed, and staff will, wherever possible be working from home.  All bar essential meetings have been cancelled.

The Town Hall is now closed, all future bookings in the near future are being refunded or rolled forward if possible.  All contact with the Council should be by telephone or e-mail.  The forthcoming Annual Town Meeting, shcehuled for Monday next week (23 March) has been cancelled and Mayor-Making in early May will be a very different eent to that held in normal years.

The following statement was issued by the Town Clerk, Shelley Parker a short while ago:

Coronavirus – COVID-19 – Statement from the Town Council

The Town Council continues to closely follow and implement government advice about emergency measures and restrictions on a daily basis.  Following the announcements made by the Prime Minister at his press conference on 16, March 2020, Town Councillors met to discuss what further measures now need to be put in place to help protect the safety of our communities in Marlborough and Manton and have made a number of decisions.

Town Council-run Public Buildings
In line with guidance on stopping non-essential contact with others, Town Councillors have agreed these measures:
To close the following buildings to the public with immediate effect:
Marlborough Town Hall
Marlborough Community & Youth Centre
Coopers Corner Community Room at George Lane Car Park
All hirers are being encouraged to roll forward bookings or, alternatively, accept refunds
Town Council Offices at 5, High Street
All contact with the Council should now be by telephone or email:
01672 512487 - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Staff will continue to try to ensure the running of services, working from home where possible.

The Town Council owns the town’s public toilets in the George Lane Car Park and at the Town Hall and is currently liaising with its maintenance contractors about these facilities.

 Town Council-led Events
The following Town Council-led events have been postponed:
Coach Friendly Status Event – 18 March
Annual Town Meeting – 23 March
Great British Spring Clean Events – 25 March, 2 April, 5 April and 7 April
Skatepark Lighting Consultation – 27 March
VE Day Commemorations – 7-8 May (commemorations may be reinstated alongside VJ Day later in the year)
Further postponements and cancellations may be announced later as guidance changes.

Public Open Spaces, Skatepark and Play Areas:
The Town Council will continue to maintain its public open spaces, skatepark and play areas, ensuring that regular health and safety checks are kept up, but all users must follow government advice about avoiding crowded places and keeping a safe distance from others.

Our Community Emergency Plan
We have had an overwhelming response to our call for volunteers to help protect the elderly, vulnerable and those alone in our communities.  Thank you to all those who have come forward, more proof of what we already knew - Marlborough has an enormously caring community
We are currently mapping our volunteers’ locations and our Assistant Town Clerk, Clare Harris, will be working with a number of organisations to match help to those who need it most so this can all be put into place as quickly as possible.
We will keep the communities in Marlborough and Manton informed via our website and social media as we know more.
In the meantime, keep up to date with all the latest information at:
