Shoppers in Marlborough on Saturday (June 29) should not be alarmed to see musket carrying soldiers in English Civil War uniforms patrolling the High Street.
The soldiers are all re-enactors and members of the English Civil War Society. They are visiting to promote the ‘Battle of Marlborough’ re-enactment weekend to be held next month – July 27 and 28.
There will also be an information stall on the market which will give a taste of what to expect.
The aim is to bring the seventeenth century alive and will include: a living history encampment in Priory Gardens, an opportunity to witness seventeenth century dining and customs and to visit a display in the exhibition room at The Merchant’s House and a grand parade by part of the Army and Cavalry marching to the battlefield on The Common (Saturday only).
The major event is the re-enactment of the Battle of Marlborough in 1642, Royalists v Parliamentarians, during the afternoons of Saturday, 27 and Sunday, 28 July.
The event is free to attend and is definitely not to be missed.
