“Be the best you can be” - Paralympian Inspires Preshute Pupils

Katrina Hart Puts Preshute Pupils through their pacesKatrina Hart Puts Preshute Pupils through their paces

GB Paralympic sprinter Katrina Hart visited Preshute Primary School on Friday Nov 3 as part of the Sports for Schools initiative.  Katrina, who has cerebral palsy, competes in the T37 category and achieved a Bronze Medal at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in the 4x100m relay.

Katrina led a sponsored fun fitness circuit with pupils, teaching them four one minute exercises that can be done anywhere.  Pupils soon mastered the 'spotty dog' exercise, followed by the leg drive or 'grass hopper', pressups and star jumps!

Doing the 'Spotty Dog'Doing the 'Spotty Dog'Katrina enjoyed putting the pupils through their paces.  “I’m thinking of going into teaching,”  she told marlborough.news.  “I like inspiring children and getting everyone involved.  The fitness circuit is a good way to get children involved, working together and supporting each other.”

Encouraged by her PE teacher to pursue her sporting ambitions, Katrina began competing at the age of 14.  As well as her success in the 2012 Paralympics she has been the British champion ten times, Double Commonwealth Silver Medalist and Double European Medalist.

After the fitness circuit Katrina gave a talk and led a question and answer session.  She emphasized her two mottos:  “Anything important to you will require hard work.”  and  “Be the best you can be.”

Liz Clough from Sports for Schools said, “We really want to inspire children into sport, showing them they can achieve anything they want to achieve and making them aware it can be any sport, not just traditional school sports.”

Exercising altogetherExercising altogetherToni Holness, Preshute teacher who organized the event, said , “We are very excited to welcome Katrina Hart to the school and to hear about all her experiences.  The main aim of the event is to inspire pupils to take up sport and fitness but just as importantly to encourage them to discover and pursue their passion in life.”

Pupils were sponsored to take part in the fitness circuit and the money raised will be used to buy new sports equipment for the school as well as to support Sports for Schools.
