Knockout approval for Marlborough Boxing Club’s pavilion project

Marlborough Boxing Club’s plans to bring back to life the dilapidated Old Pavilion, in Elcot Lane, received a pat on the back last night (Monday) from members of Marlborough town council’s Property Committee.

“I think what you’re doing is fabulous,” Councillor Richard Pitts told three members of the club involved in the renovation exercise, “I congratulate your efforts.”

And Councillor Andrew Ross, who chairs the Marlborough sports forum, agreed. “Very encouraging,” he said.

Club secretary Steve Hurst revealed that the club, founded in 2009, had now submitted a planning application to Wiltshire Council for the project thanks to raising the necessary funds by staging a charity event.

Support to turn the eyesore building into a worthwhile project is now supported by the Amateur Boxing Association and the club has made an application for funding to Sport England.

“It’s been a long and challenging road,” added Steve. “We are looking forward to having the pavilion up to scratch and open for business by September or October.”
