Marlborough Rugby: Marlborough bounce back with emphatic victory over Trowbridge

Marlborough captain Jack Lynd goes over to score early in the matchMarlborough captain Jack Lynd goes over to score early in the match

 Marlborough 50 - 7 Trowbridge

On Saturday (21 September) Marlborough had a point to prove after the dismal result from the previous week when they had gone down to Sherborne and were given a rude awakening.  The weather was stunning on the Common as Summer was slowly giving way to Autumn.

Marlborough’s start was very slow, with poor defending which allowed Trowbridge to score the first try of the match within five minutes of the whistle being blown which they then converted (0-7).

The home side took a bit longer to warm up but when they did, they did it with style running three quick tries past a slightly dumbfounded Trowbridge side who thought they had had got the upper hand by scoring quickly, thereby knocking Marlborough’s confidence – unfortunately this was not the case for the visitors.  The tries came from Will Grant, Callum Hunt and Jack Lynd, but only one was converted by Will Grant (17-7).

Trowbridge upped the ante and applied pressure to a rejuvenated Marlborough’s side whose defence held out extremely well with the Captain, Jack Lynd leading from the front (as usual).  There was one more score just before half time with tight head prop Widen Robanakadavu breaking through numerous tackles and scoring in the corner;  Will kindly did the honours and converted (24-7).

The second half started as the first had finished with Marlborough taking control and playing some exceptional and entertaining rugby.  New front row Solomone Aniseko, scored two superb tries on his debut for the Club, one was converted by Will (36-7).

Another newbie to Marlborough this season, who created a very good impression of himself, was open side flanker Ben Broadhall who scored with an individual run from just outside Trowbridge’s 22 metres line which Will kindly converted (43-7).

Not to be out done, new full back Jimmy Adams, who had an outstanding game, also finished with a superb try set up by Amori Nailago and converted by Will.

The final score was Marlborough 50 - Trowbridge 7 which was a vastly better performance than the from the week before.  The lads showed that they could draw a line under that game and move on, working hard on what they had got wrong.  It was a very satisfying day for the home side but unfortunately it was slightly marred by a red card for Solomone Aniseko for a high tackle, but the team moves onwards and upwards, looking ahead to the away match at Wimborne next Saturday.
